WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Paul W. Fraysure, Jr., D.M.D.

Dear Colleague:

Despite all the hoopla about Y2K, the millennium arrived without much incident, and we are already two-thirds of the way through 2000. Now it’s time to begin a new year for the Central District. Where are we going? How are we going to get there? What does the future hold? Our new GDA president, Dr. Mike Rainwater, has chosen "Charting the Course for Dentistry" as the theme for his year in office.

Stephen Covey said that one of the most important characteristics of effective people was "begin with the end in mind." First, we have to know where we are going. What is our goal? Then, we have to chart our course of how to get there. There is no way to know for certain what the future holds for us. We must be like the turtle, which has to stick its neck out to get ahead.

You will be afforded many opportunities to have a voice in charting our course this year, whether it is simply attending a CDDS meeting or serving on a district committee. It may be attending the all day doctor/staff meeting on Friday, October 27 with your staff or participating in the GDA Law Day at the state capitol in Atlanta on Tuesday, February 27. With this being an election year, you might wish to be a contact dentist for a new or returning legislator and escort him/her to the CDDS Legislative Reception on December 5. How about going to the state capitol for the opening day of the legislature in January or helping with a legislator’s political campaign? Whichever way you choose to be involved, it takes each and every one of us to make a difference, to make the Central District effective.

During the 1999-2000 Legislative session, another opportunity had new life breathed back into it, the opportunity to serve the disadvantaged and less fortunate children of our state. Increased Medicaid fees and improved administrative procedures were passed by the legislature. We asked for it, now we have to put up or shut up. Let’s be proactive. If we don't sign up as Medicaid providers, we may find ourselves no longer the captain of our own ship.

An obstacle that does stand in our way in the future is that of dental manpower. We have faced it once before with the dental hygienist shortage, but now a shortage of qualified dental assistants and other dental auxiliaries looms before us both in Georgia and nationally. Likewise, there is a shortage of dental educators that is surfacing across the nation and is being felt at MCG. Again, we must be ready to come to the assistance of our profession. Maybe you are the one to do the job. Don't sit back and wait for someone to come and ask you to get involved. Step up to the plate and take a swing. You never know, you may be the one that makes the difference.

Another way that you can be involved is to recruit new members and bring them to one of our meetings or be a mentor to a young dentist just getting started. Strength comes in numbers, and we must keep our numbers strong to have an effective voice that will be heard at the capitol and in our local communities. Be politically active if you have never been before. Think "Win-Win" and move from "Me" to "We." Come and join us and help us "Chart the Course for Dentistry."

Tobacco Prevention Money

Tom Duval is writing a grant and he wants to put tobacco education and collaboration with dentists and the local dental society in the application. He is brainstorming for ideas at this point.

There is a lot of tobacco money that will be spent on tobacco prevention education coming to the area.

Ideas are needed for partnering with local organizations for adult prevention advertising and education.

Tom explained "I thought I might include sponsoring a continuing education course for dentists, hygienists, assistants regarding private office education and prescribing the patch by practicing dentists etc...

Also free tobacco education literature would be tailored for the district.

What do you think? I need some ideas. "

Help Elect Howard Jones to ADA President

In the coming year , we will have a rare opportunity here in Georgia. We can elect a President of the American Dental Association from our state.

Our Trustee, Dr. Howard Jones from Carrollton has agreed to run for theoffice of President Elect at the ADA meeting in Kansas City in 2001. It would be comforting to have someone with Howard's values at the helm of our organization. That is the good news. The bad news is that a campaign for President of our organization cost $150,000. Howard must visit almost all of the fifty states. We need the help of every dentist in Georgia. Many of you have already contributed generously. Please if you have now agreed to help do so now by making a check to the Georgia Dental Assn Trustee Fund in whatever amount that you can. This is a good investment in our profession.

Please call me if you have any questions.

Thanks,   Ty   Campaign Chairman
