WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Paul W. Fraysure, Jr., D.M.D.

Dear Colleagues:

As you read this newsletter, my term of office as your president will be coming to an end with our annual tri-district meeting in St. Simons. It has been a gratifying year and the fulfillment of a life-long dream. I never thought that a boy from Kentucky could come to Georgia and be accepted as I have been. I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to make so many friends by serving my profession and my community. Dentistry has been good to me, but I will never be able to give back as much as I have received.

It all began when I was fortunate enough to be brought to Middle Georgia by the U.S. Air Force, and then to buy the practice of George and Anne Hanse. It was shortly after that that I met Ty Ivey, whom I asked how I could become involved in organized dentistry. He told me to let it be known that I wanted to serve in some capacity. Before I could turn around, Bill Shipp called and asked me to be an alternate delegate to the GDA. For the next eight years I served as either an alternate delegate or delegate. Then, Alex Bell asked me to replace him as secretary/treasurer. Four years later, I was asked to go through the chairs from vice-president to president.

Along the way Leon Aronson, then president of the GDA, asked me to chair the GDA Relief and Necrology committee. Next came requests to chair three different committees for the GDA Annual Meeting.

I use myself as an example of how to become involved in organized dentistry. I am not unique for others before me have had similar experiences, but regardless of the individual or how they were involved, there are opportunities for anyone who is interested to become involved if you will just tell someone.

To my committee chairmen, I say thanks. Bill Argo, you directed one of the best legislative receptions we have ever had. To Nancy O’Brien, thanks for chairing a super-committee with your usual efficiency. Kendrick Mathews, you did a great job keeping our membership over 200. Our Council on Dental Health committee chairperson, Shirley Fisher, did a superb job with Children’s Dental Health Month. And Lindsay Holliday, your newsletters just get better and better as our e-mail list continues to grow. Craig McCroba, thanks for being our secretary/treasurer, a sometimes-thankless job. Bob Vedder, where would I be without your tidbits of wisdom? And finally, thank you Jay Harrington for being a confidante and excellent role model as immediate past president.

I want to thank my associate, Steve Holcomb, for his support, as well as two of my mentors, Russ Eyman and Jim Hall, whom I greatly admire and whose advice I greatly appreciate. And now it is with a great sense of pride that I pass the torch of leadership to my successor, Don Benton. Good luck, Don.

To my colleagues I say thank you for the opportunity that you afforded me by electing me to serve as your president. If I can be of further service to organized dentistry and the Central District Dental Society, all you have to do is ask.

GDA to meet in Biloxi?

The GDA President Elect Conference will be held the weekend of April 20-21. Don Benton and Kendrick Mathews will attend to further their knowledge of the GDA and to build better relationships among the districts.

One of the items to be discussed is the possibility of having a GDA Annual Meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi. Don has requested input from our CDDS membership. He may be contacted by voice 478-475-1980, fax 475-5654 or email: t-doc@ix.netcom.com
