EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

Dr. Ty Ivey's office
1902 Forsyth Street, Macon
All Committee Chairpersons, Delegates, and Officers are members of the Executive Committee and are required to attend.
Other interested district members are welcome to attend.

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Donald Benton, D.M.D.
Dear Colleague,
GDA President John Freihaut has selected as his theme for 2001-2002: "GDA: A Proud Family Heritage". John says in the July 2001 edition of Action: "I hope to energize the students, the new members, and the non-members with the value of our Association. I also hope that with this theme and some planned initiatives I can bring all of our groups together: the diversity groups, the specialty groups, and the student groups. They all offer a slightly different perspective and add a new dimension to Dentistry in our great state." While attending each of the Executive Committee meetings this past year as well as John's planning session in April it is very apparent that he is well informed, insightful and committed to doing the work of OUR Association. I am asking each one of you to get behind the leadership to make this one of our best years.

The difference is YOU! My goals for the Central District are :To improve communication within the District, Reinforce the value of membership to our colleagues that have fallen away or never joined, and maintain our strong showing during our District Law Day in Atlanta which will be on February 19,2002.

Please be advised that this is the end of a biennial license renewal cycle and that notices will begin going out at some point prior to December. You will have the option of renewing on-line again this cycle so be warned not to delay when notices come out. Remember also that you must have 40 hours of CE and Hygienists must have a minimum of 22. Don't get caught short, you could be audited by the Board.

Nancy O'Brien has done an excellent job of planning our CDDS Staff Day on October 26, 2001 with a double header of Radiology and Oral Medicine. This promises to be an excellent way to get some quality hours close to home!

The Annual Legislative Reception will be on November 27, 2001. Please make plans to attend and encourage your friends to attend as well. We all need to be in attendance and work on our relationships with the people that can seriously affect the way we treat our patients. Don't stand back and accept the possibility that someone else will do the work for you.

I will be reinforcing this message: Be involved to protect your patients and the way you want to continue to practice. If we are not vigilant, we could find ourselves in the woes of our physician friends...ravaged by managed care. A collective voice gets heard! Be an advocate for your patient.

Sincerely,

Don Benton

Dental Hygiene Program at Macon State College is Closing

This is the first newsletter since the announcement of the closing of the dental hygiene program at Macon State College. In April, Dr. David Bell, President of Macon State College, announced in the Macon Telegraph that the dental hygiene program would not accept applicants for the 2002 class which would normally start this fall. Macon State has decided to focus their curriculum on Information Technologies. The CDDS Executive Committee first heard of the pending change at the winter meeting. A CDDS committee had already met with Dr. Bell and Dr. Tom Isherwood to discuss the need for a program in Macon. While it was clear to the committee that changes for the program were coming soon , the timing was much quicker that expected.

Applicants for the program will be directed to the Middle Georgia Technical School in Warner Robins. Dental Hygiene Programs in Georgia are experiencing a shift from a college based program to a joint college/vo-tech training environment. This change appears to be coming from the Board of Regents in an effort to build a core of dental hygiene and dental assisting programs under the same academic umbrella. It is safe to say that the dental community needs to be prepared to help in this transition in order to help maintain the manpower base necessary to serve the patients of middle Georgia.

Our liaison to the Macon State Hygiene Program for many years has been Nancy O'Brien. The CDDS is indebted to her for long service which has allowed her to gain a considerable depth of knowledge in this area.

Member's News:

Joe Boland is immortalized in chapter 9 of a humorous autobiographic novel titled Sex, Dead Dogs and Me by Macon author Ed Williams. Joe earned the undying gratitude of a rabid GA Tech fan, Williams, by placing a yellow jacket mascot image on a posterior crown. If the reader enjoys adolescent male humor, then be prepared for some uncontrollable laughter as experienced by your editor/book-reviewer, Lindsay Holliday.
